Skies were sunny and temp hit ~60 degrees when I finished around 12:30. In my never ending search for the perfect Golf GPS watch I setup my new Samsung Gear S3 Frontier LTE last night, loaded a couple of golf apps and headed to the course this morning. Samsung Gear S3 as a Golf GPS watch review Why is the approach to Smart Watch apps such a mess, and why is it even more of one on the Gear S3 I wonder. If I could get a database of courses free or cheaply I think I'd have a go at porting it to Tizen but putting them all in manually is a bit of a pain. which makes the not insubstantial £300 outlay for the S3 much more justifiable, indeed pretty attractive, if you aren't having to spend £160 to £220 on a separate golf watch.Ĭuriously the situation with no Smart Watch Apps not displaying hazards was true with Android Wear as well.so I wrote my own on the Sony SW3 and used Cesium and a little script to map courses. All you need is stand-alone operation, hazards supporting and competition mode (no slope etc information) and you have the perfect golf watch. Looking at the Tizen docs for GPS positioning on the S3 there should be no problem whatsoever using on-board GPS as rather born out by 1) The GPS Quick Test app in the Gear store and 2) The ability of many Samsung Apps to use it quite happily! Smart Caddie looks nice but course coverage in my quick look has some gaping holes. Why, I cannot fathom.they have the hazard locations and they're just geo-cooordinates like anything else and shot measurement is trivial. They don't support shot-distance measuring either. and battery life is excellent in this mode as well) and so do Smart Caddie (Golfzon) but neither of them support hazards, just green front/centre/back. without the noise from the WiFi and Bluetooth I guess. Golf Navi have an app that works just fine in stand-alone mode (it actually by the way seems very accurate. Hole 19 have an app but it doesn't work in stand-alone mode. Golfpad say they can't use the onboard GPS because of the way Samsung have designed the system. Swing by Swing say they have had their app pulled from the Samsung Store! I have to say I'm baffled by what's going on around the Gear S3 and golf apps.
